Usually not. When the existing concrete is structurally sound, rubber surfacing can often be installed directly over it. Significant movement, heaving or structural damage may need to be repaired before installation.

Minor cracks and small imperfections can commonly be covered during preparation and installation. Large structural cracks, movement or heaving require individual assessment because movement in the base can affect any surface installed above it.

When installed correctly, rubber surfacing is designed to flex through seasonal freeze-thaw cycles. This flexibility helps it accommodate temperature changes better than rigid materials. The underlying base must still be stable and properly prepared.

Many residential projects can be installed in one to two days. Cure time depends on temperature, humidity, system thickness and site conditions. Thickness depends on the application. Residential resurfacing commonly uses a thinner system than playground safety surfacing. Playground installations require a system designed for the applicable fall height and impact-attenuation requirements.

Remove loose debris with a leaf blower or soft broom, then rinse with a garden hose. Mild soap can be used when needed. Avoid harsh solvents and test any cleaner in a small area first. Pressure washing may be appropriate when the correct fan tip, distance and pressure are used for the condition of the surface.
